When the conversation of mental health is brought up, people often do not mention how connected physical health and mental health are, which is the point of this article. Physical health directly impacts the functioning of the brain and its ability to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Physical exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and well-being. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Stress Reduction
Exercise and physical activity can help reduce levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is produced by your two adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney. When something stressful happens in someone's life, increased amounts of cortisol are released into their bloodstream, making them feel stressed.. Lower cortisol levels are associated with improved mental clarity, better mood, and reduced anxiety.
Confidence/Nutrition
Engaging in physical activities and achieving fitness goals can enhance self-esteem and self-confidence. Feeling good about one's physical health can positively impact overall mental well-being. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support brain function and mental health. Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to mood disorders and cognitive impairment. By focusing on eating properly, it is significantly easier to have better mental health.
Sleep
Sleep is one of the most important factors in a healthy mental state. If you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions solving problems, controlling our emotions and behavior, and coping with change. Sleep deficiency has also been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior. For adults, 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended to promote healthy mental health, and for children, anything under 8 hours of sleep can prove to be detrimental over time.
Long-term Health
Maintaining good physical health through regular exercise and a healthy diet can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. These conditions are not only detrimental to physical health but can also impact mental health negatively.
Overall, physical wellness and mental wellness are deeply intertwined, with each influencing and supporting the other. By staying physically active, one can reduce the chances of contracting illnesses, which can negatively impact both mental and physical health. Taking care of your body through exercise, nutrition, and adequate sleep can significantly contribute to maintaining a positive mental state and overall well-being.
